Everything has to follow a certain path that begins at a particular point and ends at another. There is nothing that ever starts in the middle. All the recipes you come across on the internet has to be followed or you wouldn’t be able to make the dish exactly the way you want to. Sure, sometimes you can mess it up even after following every instruction but surely you can’t start cooking something from the seventh step. Any process can be easily messed up if it is not started in the right way. A machine at a candy factory cannot pack the stick first and then add candy on the top, that would be plain stupid. But just because there is no candy in other processes, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be following the same rule too.
Part of the thing about following the process that someone who is not an expert might not know how to go about something. Sure, everyone who know a little about cooking can follow a recipe and make something but imagine if surgeons left tutorials on YouTube for medical students. That wouldn’t be very wise now, would it? There are things that you can’t learn just by watching it mainly because doing those things not only require you to have the know-how about it but also practice. Instinct is another thing that people need when they are working on something and the more time they spend in a field, the better their instincts get. Doctors make decisions on the go and the confidence to make those decisions come after years of working in the field and treating thousands of patients.
An experienced painter can fix a painting even if they accidentally splash paint on it but someone who has had no experience with colors, canvas, and brushes might mess up the artwork more by trying to fix it. So, a good process laid out in front of you will be of no help to you if you haven’t followed the process multiple times in the past too. An artist’s first artwork is far from perfect. The second one isn’t any better either. But with time and practice, it keeps on improving until they forget their beginning. Once their hand become expert at making strokes on the canvas, they don’t need to think hard before moving their brush.
Although everything has a process that should be followed, when it comes to creative works, the instinct of the person plays a bigger role than the procedure itself. One artist may prefer to use a certain color first and then go around it, another may never use that color at all. One author may write a scene that comes in the later part of the story before writing the beginning, while another may start from the beginning and then walk towards the end. When it comes to the creative people, each person has a process of their own and following that becomes a habit after years of practice. Their process might not be the same as of their fellow creators but if it works, it is perfect for them.
Translation may be considered a science due to the complexities involved in the process but at the end of the time, it is a creative process that requires the translator to use his experience and instinct more than anything in the world. A translator’s first project is never a commissioned work. It is the practice they do by interpreting random documents. Maybe they even interpret documents whose translation they already have and can compare later with their work to see the difference. But after gaining experience for years, translators fall into a process that helps them get the work done.
The steps translation process can be different for different interpreters, but mainly they involve the following:
- Understanding the Document:
Each paper, file, or record has to tell a certain story. Before translating it, interpreters go through it to get the gist of it. Figuring out the meaning of the document is very important. It gives the translators an idea about their work and they get a direction in which they should go to interpret that document. This step, in simple terms, mean reading the document and understanding what it is trying to convey to its readers.
- First Translation:
Once they get the feel of the document, translators start working on the initial draft. This step involves translating the original document in free flow. Not a lot of time is spent on coming up with proper phrases for each sentence. Only the basic idea of the document is conveyed clearly in this translation.
- Review:
In the stages of translation process, after making the initial draft, all translators review the document and check its accuracy. Once they are sure about the authenticity of the document, they move on to the final step.
- Improving Wording:
Steps in translation process cannot be complete without improving the overall look and wording of the translated document. It doesn’t have to be too difficult to understand but it also cannot look like it was written by a third grader. In the final step, every translator polishes their work and refine the wording to make it look the best.
